STRIKE: ELECTRICITY GENERATION DROPS TO 3086MW

Nigeria’s overall electricity generation profile has dropped to about 3,086.10 megawatts (MW), owing to the ongoing strike by workers in the country’s oil and gas sector.

The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, yesterday confirmed that the industrial action embarked upon by the oil workers across the country was affecting gas supply to key thermal generation plants in the country, hence, the drop in power supply.

TOTAL TARGETS 1,000MW SOLAR POWER PROJECT IN NIGERIA

French oil giant, Total targets to build solar power plants that will generate 1,000 megawatts in Nigeria as part of the company’s efforts to address the power supply challenges in the country.

The Managing Director of Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria, Mrs. Elisabeth Proust told THISDAY in a recent interview that Total had decided to focus on one type of alternative energy in Nigeria, which is Solar.

According to her, the company started in many countries in West Africa, Asia and the Middle East by providing energy to the people with no electricity.

GROWING GAS DEMAND DRIVES PUSH TO EXPLOIT NIGERIA’S INLAND BASINS

With domestic gas demand expected to further increase, as more power plants are set to come on stream to bridge power supply deficits, Nigeria needs to look beyond the Gas Master Plan and explore its inland basins to meet its gas needs, industry experts have said.

The Nigerian Gas Master Plan (NGMP) which was approved in February 2008, was designed to optimise the vast gas resources in the country, but almost six years after, not much of the desired result has been achieved.
