SAVE US FROM GAS FLARING, DELTA COMMUNITIES CRY OUT

Oil and gas producing communities in Ndokwa and Ukwuani Local Government Areas of Delta State have appealed to the federal government and the international community to take urgent steps to end the flaring of gas by oil companies operating in their areas within the shortest time possible.

RELIEF AS TOTAL ACHIEVES GAS FLARE-OUT IN OFON OILFIELD

Efforts by the federal government to end the flare of gas by oil companies operating in the country have received a boost as Total has completed the gas flare-out of the Ofon field on Oil Mining Lease (OML) 102 offshore Nigeria.

Apart from the greenhouse gas emission and attendant environmental hazards associated with gas flaring, Nigeria had lost average revenue of $2.5 billion to flared gas.

NIGERIA LOSES $800M ANNUALLY TO GAS FLARING’

The British Government has said that Nigeria loses $800 million worth of gas every year through gas flaring.

To this end, the Minister of Environment, Laurentia Mallam, said that President Goodluck was keen on ending gas flaring in Nigeria as part of the determination to improve the economy of the country through improvement in power generating capacity of the energy sector.

FG CONSIDERING $3.50 GAS FLARE FINE

The Federal Government has not discarded its plans to raise gas flaring penalty to $3.50 for a million standard cubic feet per day, but is rather still considering the increase, the President, Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists, Mrs. Adedoja Ojelabi, has said.

The fines imposed by the government have also increased over the years to about N10/mmscf/day ($0.06/mmscf/day.

NLNG SAVED FLARING 4.2TCF OF GAS

The Managing Director of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited, Mr. Babs Omotowa, has disclosed that save for the Nigeria’s decision to incorporate the NLNG in 1989, the country would have been flaring approximately 4.2 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of associated gas by now.

Omotowa said in a paper delivered at the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) Conference in Abuja recently that inasmuch as Nigeria formalised the NLNG Act to help end gas flaring and monetised her vast natural gas resources, it also tarried in getting the project off the drawing board.
