NEC C’TTEE: FG LACKS RESOURCES TO STOP VANDALISM, OIL THEFT

The ad hoc Committee on Crude Oil Theft Prevention and Control of the National Economic Council (NEC) has revealed that government does not have adequate operational vessels to patrol and secure the network of pipelines in the Niger Delta.

Briefing journalists at the end of the 67th meeting of NEC which held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Admiral John Jonah Atuama (rtd), said the committee also discovered that massive unemployment among youths in the Niger Delta region had contributed in no small measure to the rising incidence of oil theft and vandalism of oil company facilities in the region.

NUPENG CALLS FOR STAKEHOLDERS’ SUMMIT TO STOP OIL THEFT

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Sunday called for a stakeholders summit comprising of ship owners, DAPPMAN, Police, Army, Navy, NNPC, DSS, DPR, Civil Defense Corps, NUPENG and PENGASSAN to fashion out a new strategy to end oil theft and pipelines vandalisation.

 

NUPENG’s President, Comrade (Dr.) Igwe Achese , who made the call during a courtesy call on the chief of Army Staff, Lt – General Tukur Buratai in Abuja, stressed the needs for stakeholders’ involvement on ways to minimizing oil theft in the country.

NNPC, SECURITY AGENCIES MEET OVER OIL THEFT

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has begun consultation with security agencies on how to use drones to monitor the movement of oil bearing vessels across the nation’s territorial waters.

It was learnt that the corporation would partner with the Nigerian military, navy, police and the Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps for the purpose and would soon commence the deployment of drones in a bid to meet its target of halting oil theft in the next eight months.

NAVY DESTROYS 78 ILLEGAL REFINERIES IN RIVERS

Nigerian Navy said it has destroyed 78 illegal crude oil refineries in Rivers State. Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, also warned officers and men of the Navy against aiding oil theft in Niger Delta region.

Destruction of the illegal refineries commenced June 15 and is still onging, even as the operations were carried out in Onne axis, Bolo, Alakiri, Cartharwn channels, Bille and Ke in Port Harcourt and Bonny areas.

BUHARI URGED TO UNVEIL POLICY ON OIL THEFT

President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to urgently unveil a policy direction and action his government will take to eradicate oil theft.

An anti-oil theft initiative, ‘Seal the Crude,’ which made the call in a statement by its Programme Officer, Stephen Hemba, said the problem was no longer ‎tolerable and since it is a recurring issue passed on to the Buhari administration, the President must waste no time in outlining a policy thrust to address it.

NAVY HAS ACHIEVED DRASTIC REDUCTION IN CRUDE OIL THEFT – JIBRIN

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Usman Jibrin, has said that the Nigerian Navy in the last one year has achieved a drastic reduction in crude oil theft.
 

Jibrin who was represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Rear Admiral Johnson Olutoyin stated this during the Inter-Denominational Church Service, marking the 59th Anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, at the All Saints Protestant Church, Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja.

HOUSE TO PROBE IOCs OVER OIL THEFT

The House of Representatives on Tuesday resolved to compel the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin, to identify International Oil Companies (IOCs) involved in oil theft in the coastal waters.

The House yesterday also passed a resolution urging the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to stop its plans to increase electricity tariffs across the country.

INSECURITY THREATENING OIL PRODUCTION, SAYS MINISTER

The Federal Government on Monday admitted that the lingering security challenges in the country is threatening the nation’s leading position in oil production and exports.

Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke at the International Health Safety and Environment Biennial Conference in Lagos Monday, bemoaned the spate of vandalism and oil theft that have become a cankerworm to the growth of the industry.

NAVY DESTROYS TWO ILLEGAL REFINERIES IN RIVERS

In its determination to end oil theft in the country, the Nigerian Navy has set ablaze two illegal refineries in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Base Operations Officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder, Port Harcourt, Commander Chido Yahaya, also disclosed that two Cotonou boats laden with stolen crude oil were similarly set ablaze.
