AI REPORT BLAMES SHELL, EXPOSES FAILURE TO CLEAN NIGER DELTA OIL SPILLS

The Amnesty International (AI) and the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) will next week launch a new report exposing what it described as Shell’s false statements about its efforts to clean up oil spills in the Niger Delta at a press conference in Abuja, Nigeria.

The Press Officer, AI Nigeria, Mr. Eulette Ewart, in a statement yesterday, said despite promising to act on a 2011 United Nations Environmental Programme (UNDP) report exposing shocking levels of pollution caused by oil spills, ‘Clean it up: Shell’s failure to tackle oil spills in Nigeria’ documents that Shell has either not cleaned up or has done it so badly that oil still pollutes the land.

OGONI SPILL: FG SET TO RELEASE FIRST TRANCHE OF $10M TO BEGIN CLEAN-UP

Federal Government has announced plans to release the first tranche of $10 million to begin the process of cleaning up areas devastated by oil spills in Ogoniland.

Although actual date for the release of these funds has not been disclosed yet, there were indications that the funds would be largely deployed for logistic arrangements, including setting up of a board of trustees to manage the implementation of the clean-up.

BAYELSA ASSURE ON PROBE OF AGIP PIPELINE EXPLOSION

Bayelsa State Government, yesterday, said that investigation into last month crude oil pipeline explosion that killed 14 persons at the Agip oil field in Azuzuama, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state was underway.

Among those who lost their lives in the tragic explosion were 12 maintenance crew members, one official each from Bayelsa Ministry of Environment and National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA -

AI: SHELL MUST MATCH GOVT’S COMMITMENT TO CLEAN OIL SPILLS

Amnesty International (AI) yesterday appealed to Shell to ensure that it complies with the federal government’s new commitment to tackle oil pollution in the Niger Delta by dramatically improving on how it cleans up oil spills in the Niger Delta.

President Buhari’s had on Wednesday announced a trust fund to pay for the clean-up of the Ogoniland region.

SHELL KNOWS OF PIPELINE PROBLEMS

Oil giant Shell was warned by its own staff that the Trans Niger Pipeline had a “risk and likelihood of rupture” years before two spills in 2008 spewed as much as 500,000 barrels of oil in the town of Bodo in Ogoniland, Rivers State.

The BBC reported these revelations after viewing internal company documents submitted to a court in London, where some 15,000 Nigerians are suing Shell over a separate spill from the same pipeline.
